The Contra Costa County Board of Education
The Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) is one of California’s 58 county offices of education. It supports the county’s roughly 18 school districts, ~286 schools, and ~169,000–170,000 students. It provides regional services that are more efficient at the county level (budget/LCAP oversight and approval, fiscal support, professional development, technology, etc.) while also directly operating specialized instructional programs for vulnerable students.
Main Administrative Structure / Offices & Departments
Key high-level areas include:
County Superintendent of Schools and County Board of Education (oversight). The superintendent’s office reviews and approves the annual budgets and Local control and Accountability Plans (LCAPS) of all county school districts.
Student Programs and Services — Direct instructional programs and related supports.
Educational Services — Leadership/support to local education agencies (LEAs), including curriculum & instruction, professional development, assessment/accountability, school improvement, LCAP support, and related networks.
Business and Administrative Services — District business/payroll services, accounting, fiscal services, School-Based Medi-Cal Administrative Activities (SMAA), general services, and technology systems.
Human Resources, Communications & Special Projects, and other support functions (e.g., credentials, public records, transcripts).
Instructional Programs & Schools/Facilities Operated by CCCOE:
CCCOE runs specialized schools and classes (primarily for students with extensive support needs, court-involved youth, expelled or alternative-education students, and adults in detention). Placement is typically via district referral.
In addition, the CCCOE oversees:
Court and Community Schools
Adult Correctional Education
College and Career Readiness / Regional Occupational Program (ROP / CTE).
Youth Services: Education for Homeless Children and Youth (McKinney-Vento); Foster Youth Services Coordinating Program; Empowerment Program; Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs (in-school and out-of-school youth, work experience, case management, career pathways); California Community Schools Partnership Program support.
CCCOE does not operate the regular K–12 districts or most mainstream public schools; those are independent. It focuses on specialized direct education for high-need students plus regional support and oversight for the county’s public education system. Details (sites, contacts, exact offerings) can change; the most current information is on the official site cccoe.k12.ca.us (also referenced as cocoschools.org), including Maps & Directions and department pages.
